Rare Pair of Antique Large Hand-Painted Latin Vulgate Choral Antiphonary Pages – Framed
An exceptional and highly decorative pair of antique hand-painted Latin Vulgate choral antiphonary pages, beautifully mounted and glazed in matching wooden frames.
Each page has been individually hand painted with Gothic Latin script, traditional Gregorian chant square notation on four-line red staves, intricate floral borders, decorative initials and finely painted biblical scenes. The quality of the artwork and calligraphy is superb, making these striking examples of ecclesiastical manuscript art.
The text appears to be taken from the Latin Vulgate and includes passages believed to relate to Genesis 2:16–17, concerning God’s command to Adam in the Garden of Eden, together with a liturgical chant referring to the Holy Spirit, incorporating words such as Alleluia, Spiritus, Domini and discipulis. The beautifully painted scenes complement these sacred themes.
Large antiphonary pages such as these were traditionally created for choir books, allowing several singers to read the music and text from a single manuscript during religious services. Their combination of sacred music, Latin calligraphy and decorative artwork makes them highly desirable collectors’ pieces.
Both pages are mounted behind glass in matching wooden frames measuring approximately 55 × 70 cm, creating impressive display pieces for a home, library, music room or ecclesiastical setting.
Condition
Both are in excellent overall condition. The page in the lower frame has moved slightly within the mount and would benefit from being straightened, but this is only a minor presentation issue. Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
A wonderful and increasingly difficult-to-find pair of antique hand-painted manuscript pages offering beauty, craftsmanship and historical appeal.
These are being sold exactly as acquired, and I have not attempted to remove them from their frames for further inspection
