Original Michael (Mike) R. Hoar ARCA (1943–2017) Watercolour & Ink Landscape – “Fridz” – 1997
An attractive original landscape by listed British artist Michael R. “Mike” Hoar ARCA (1943–2017), dating from 1997.
This expressive work depicts an expansive rural landscape of rolling fields and distant hills beneath a dramatic blue sky. Hoar uses freely applied washes of green, ochre, brown and blue, interspersed with delicate pen-and-ink drawing and small gestural marks to suggest fields, hedgerows, trees, tracks and buildings.
The combination of loosely representational landscape and almost abstract passages is particularly characteristic of Hoar’s approach. He was interested not simply in recording a view but in capturing the colour, structure and atmosphere of a landscape.
The work appears to be inscribed “Fridz” towards the lower centre and is signed/initialled “M.H. ’97” lower right, dating it to 1997.
It is presented in a large cream/off-white mount and is currently unframed, making it ready for the purchaser to frame to their own taste.
About the artist
Michael R. Hoar ARCA (1943–2017) was a British painter and art lecturer, born in Evington, Leicester in 1943. He studied at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1964, and subsequently had a long academic career, becoming a senior Fine Art lecturer at what became De Montfort University, Leicester, where he worked until 2003.
Landscape was central to Hoar’s work. He extensively documented the Leicestershire countryside and subsequently worked from landscapes, skies and urban environments encountered in Spain, Japan and France. His paintings range from recognisable landscape subjects to increasingly expressive and abstract interpretations, characterised by energetic drawing, strong colour and a pronounced sense of place.
Hoar also undertook significant commissions. Batemans auctioneers records commissions including a series of skyscapes for Heathrow Terminal 4 and large paintings for P&O’s cruise ship Arcadia. He continued working professionally from his studio in south-west France until late in his life and died in 2017.
His work continues to appear on the secondary art market, and askART records him as Mike Hoar (1943–2017), British painter.
