Sir William Russell Flint Titled ‘Strange Interior Languedoc’ Ltd Edition Of 500.
Signed in pencil by the artist lower right
“The “Strange Interior” of this new picture by England's greatest living water colourist is to be found in a mysterious labyrinth of semi-underground vaults in Languedoc, the ancient province of Southern France. Although little is known of them, the vaults are presumed to be part of the neighbouring ruins of the XIIIth century or ealier wine-making establishment of the Knights Templar. A chance acquaintance gained Sir William Russell Flint the entree to this closely-guarded underworld. He was enthralled by his favourite combination of ancient masonry, and limped, rippling water. The use of the altar-like erection by the pool, the orifice, the niche in the wall, he could not discover…. He has brilliantly captured the strange beauty of the setting with softly mellowed browns and cool, unfathomable blues. “
