Originally known as the Flesh Stalls or Shambles. An 1828 directory lists 16 butchers shops on Pride Hill, 15 on Butcher Row and 9 on Fish Street
It was normal practice for medieval street names to reflect their function, or the economic activity taking place within them (especially the commodities available for sale), hence the frequency of names especially in Shrewsbury, Milk Street, Butchers Row, Fish Street, and Swinegate (pork butchers) in towns and cities with a medieval history.
