Antique Two Handled “Speed the Plough” Mug Circa 1860’s
Rare two handled glazed stoneware mug decorated in praise of farming with the caption "God speed the plough". During the nineteenth century mugs were increasingly used to celebrate and commemorate events. These ranged from the example given to a Royal Jubilee. A poem on the other side of the mug reads:
"Let the wealthy and great
Roll in splendour and state I envy them not I declare it I eat my own lamb
My own chicken and ham I shear my own fleece and I wear it I have lawns I have bowers
I have fruits I have flowers The lark is my morning alarmer So jolly boys now
Heres God speed the plough Long life and success to the farmer"
Measures approx 10cm high x 16cm wide
Has a crack to one handle as per close up photo
Will be well packaged and sent via Royal Mail signed for service
