Arnold & Sons from London is one of the few companies that manufactured this unique medical ear Brunton Otoscope. Medical history states that John Brunton invented the Otoscope, also called Auriscope in 1862. Thomas Brunton, Husar and Arnold & Sons manufactured them. The Otoscope cone shaped tube or Specula tube was placed in the ear canal. There are four absolutely beautiful specula which fit the otoscope perfectly. The direct rays of the sun or a candle light which was held by an assistant near the large opening to illuminate the internal magnifying lens inside the device so the doctor could examine the ear or while performing surgery. The Otoscope has a mirror magnifying lens inside the main tube which looks in pristine condition. The engraved stem of the Otoscope reading Arnold & Sons Surgical Instrument Manufactors Giltspur Street London is promently viewed showing the overlying Arnold & Son crest. According to Phisck Medical Antiques, as seen in their website, Arnold & Son started its buisness in 1866 and that this Otoscope dates to the late 19th century and there is "a similar example in the London Science Museum."
