M. C. Tennant – Fine 19th Century British Watercolour Landscape with Sheep


An attractive and finely executed 19th century watercolour landscape by M. C. Tennant, depicting a flock of sheep making their way along a winding country lane through mature woodland.


The composition opens out beautifully towards a distant landscape, with the sheep gathered on the sunlit track in the foreground. Tennant has used a particularly appealing palette of soft greens, autumnal browns and ochres, contrasted with the blue-grey hills on the distant horizon.


There is lovely attention to detail throughout, particularly in the individually painted sheep, rustic fencing, trees and foliage. The loose but accomplished handling of the watercolour gives the scene considerable atmosphere and depth and is very typical of the British landscape tradition of the later Victorian period.


Signed “M. C. Tennant” lower left, with the artist’s name also printed on the original gilt mount.


Presented behind glass in an attractive period-style gilt frame and gilt mount with decorative moulded detailing.


About the Artist


M. C. Tennant appears to have been a 19th-century British landscape watercolourist, specialising in traditional rural subjects. Works attributed to Tennant appear on the secondary market, including comparable countryside landscapes featuring sheep and wooded tracks.


Biographical information on the artist appears to be scarce, and I have not found sufficiently reliable records to confidently give Tennant’s full name or exact life dates. This makes surviving signed examples particularly interesting to collectors of lesser-recorded Victorian British watercolourists.
