History

Frister & Rossmann was founded in Berlin in 1864 by Gustav Rossmann and Robert Frister, becoming one of the most successful sewing machine manufacturers in the world. By 1902 the company had become Germany’s largest producer of sewing machines, exporting machines across Europe and the British Empire.

Their machines were widely sold in Britain through agents such as W. Pierssene of London, who imported and branded the machines for the UK market. Around the turn of the 20th century, Frister & Rossmann produced highly reliable hand-crank lockstitch machines, often beautifully decorated with gold decals and built to last for generations.

Today these early machines are appreciated not only for their engineering and craftsmanship, but also as charming pieces of domestic and industrial history from the Edwardian period.
