W H Kneller stamped on the back of each iron and Tiger printed across the sole
W H Kneller Known to his friends as ‘Bidge’, William Henry Kneller, the son of barge boatman, also William H, and his wife, Isabella, was born in Seaford, Sussex, in 1891 and began as a caddy on the Seaford Links course at the age of 12. He was a fellow townsman of Charles Kennett and was his assistant at the Redhill and Reigate club, lodging with Charles and his wife Florence.
By 1913 he was back in Seaford (note: not the same as the Seaford Links club) as professional and won the Sussex Professional Foursomes with Arthur Baggs of the Willingdon Club.
He served with the Royal Sussex Regiment during the First World War.
He returned to Seaford after the war; reports of him playing in competitions seem to se ‘Seaford’ and ‘Seaford Links’ interchangeably though the latter is the correct one as he was identified with the ‘Seaford Head’ club as it was then called in the 1930s. He remained there until his retirement in November 1962.
