Early 20th Century Watercolour of Lancing, West Sussex by William Hyams (1878-1952).
William Hyams, the Sussex artist, was born in Portsmouth in 1878.
He spent his time between there and the Channel Islands before moving to Brighton some time later.
When living in Brighton he financed his love of painting by driving a taxi when times were slack; yet it was watercolours that opened his eyes to the significant elements of nature, in which light, air and movement were active - to the delight of his followers.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy twice, once in 1936 with a painting entitled Whitby, and in 1938 with one inscribed as Sterling; whilst also exhibiting at the Brighton Public Art Gallery annually. One contemporary critic said of him:
"He has the salt of the sea in his blood, and the love of Sussex in his painting." William Hams died in 1952 at the age of 74.
The frame measures approx 45 x 39cm
