Vintage Copeland Spode J F Herring Hunting Scene Milk Jug, Titled Off to Draw
Vintage Herring Hunt pitcher trimmed in green manufactured by Copeland Spode, England. This piece features an iconic fox hunt scene from a series of drawings entitled "The Hunt" by artist John Frederick Herring. This particular image - 'Off to Draw' - depicts a group of equestrians as they set off to draw out their quarry. The piece, measuring 5" in height and 7 1/2" from the tip of the spout to edge of the handle, is marked on the bottom with the Copeland Spode England hunt cap and huntmaster's whip backstamp, including the code "2/9265 K" which represents the pattern number. The piece has a 24 oz capacity and was made to be used as a milk pitcher. The Herring Hunt pattern was first introduced in 1948 and was discontinued by Spode in 2005, making pieces of this popular design highly collectible. This pitcher is an excellent example and is in pristine vintage condition with no crazing, chips, cracks or repairs. It shows little evidence of use and does not have any interior staining. It would make a wonderful addition to an existing Spode/Copeland Hunt scenes by Herring collection, or is a great stand alone piece.
