The Memphis Belle was one of the first US Army Air Forces B-17 heavy bombers to complete 25 combat missions. This achievement was significant as it meant the crew could return home, and the aircraft was then used on a tour to raise money for war bonds. The plane is now on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
The painting depicts the Memphis Belle in flight, with other aircraft in the background and a landscape below. The Memphis Belle was named in honor of the pilot's fiancée. The bomber and its crew became a symbol of American courage and resilience during World War II
