Measures approx 96cm h x 58cm wide
It’s a beautiful piece of Edwardian furniture and has some loss to the veneer on the lower part around the side of the leg but it is over 100 years old. I have shared various photos
The Northamptonshire Regiment (formed in 1881) incorporated the battle honour "Gibraltar" due to the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment's participation in the Siege of Gibraltar. This honour is depicted on the regiment's cap badge with a depiction of the castle and key of Gibraltar. The regiment also had its own depot in Northampton called Gibraltar Barracks.
The History of the Honour
* 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot:
This antecedent regiment of the Northamptonshire Regiment was part of the garrison during the Siege of Gibraltar. For their service, they were awarded the honour of "Gibraltar".
* The Northamptonshire Regiment:
When the 58th Regiment amalgamated with the 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot in 1881, the "Gibraltar" honour was carried forward by the new regiment.
Depiction on the Badge
* The Northamptonshire Regiment's cap badge features the three-towered castle of Gibraltar with a vertical key below it. This symbol is often set within a laurel wreath.
* Above the castle, a scroll reads "Gibraltar," and below it, another scroll displays the honour "Talavera".
Gibraltar Barracks, Northampton
* The Northamptonshire Regiment's depot, established after the 1881 Childers Reforms, was located at Gibraltar Barracks in Northampton. This was the regimental depot where the regiment was based.
