Lovely Early Victorian Schoolgirl Sampler Dated 1844 - Jane Ground
A charming and authentic 19th-century needlework sampler, worked and signed by Jane Ground, aged 11 years, and clearly dated 26th November 1844. A fine example of early Victorian schoolgirl embroidery with strong historical and decorative appeal.
The sampler is neatly stitched in dark thread on a linen ground and features multiple alphabets in upper and lower case, numerals, and traditional decorative borders. Centrally placed is a devotional verse typical of the moral instruction of the period:
“I must for faith incessant cry
And wrestle, Lord, with thee;
I must be born again, or die
To all eternity.”
The inscription at the lower section reads:
“Jane Ground, Aged 11 Years, Nover 26th 1844.”
The sampler is attractively housed in a wooden frame with gilt inner slip, which suits the piece well and allows it to be displayed immediately. There is age-related toning, light fading and wear consistent with its age of over 180 years, all adding to its genuine character.
