A scarce and handsome Victorian edition of The Complete Works of Shakspere – Tragedies, revised from the original editions and edited by J. O. Halliwell, Esq., F.R.S., F.S.A., one of the most respected Shakespearean scholars of the 19th century.
Printed and published by John Tallis and Company, London and New York, this impressive volume dates to the mid-19th century (circa 1850s) and features a striking original blue cloth hardback binding with elaborate gilt decoration, allegorical figures and classical motifs to the front cover.
Condition - worn
• Externally: General age-related wear as expected. Rubbing, edge wear and fading to the cloth, particularly to corners and spine edges. Gilt remains attractive but softened with age.
• Internally: Pages are complete. Foxing and age spotting throughout, heavier to some early and end pages. Binding is loose at the front, with cracking to the inner hinge and some separation visible (see photos), but the text block remains intact.
