An evocative and highly atmospheric vintage ship-in-a-bottle, believed to date from circa WWII, 1942, and traditionally associated with POW (Prisoner of War) folk art. The bottle contains a carefully handcrafted sailing ship with masts, rigging and painted hull, set on a simulated sea with coastal detailing visible within the bottle.
Ship-in-bottle pieces were often made by sailors and prisoners of war using limited materials, making them powerful historic artefacts as well as decorative objects. This example has a wonderfully honest, naive quality consistent with wartime folk craftsmanship.
