A fine and attractive matched pair of 19th-century watercolours by Agnes Bonham, depicting picturesque Alpine scenes in Austria, each carefully observed and delicately painted.

• Left watercolour: Scene near Innsbruck, Austria, dated 1892

• Right watercolour: Caprile, Austrian Tyrol, dated May 1896


Both works show charming rural figures set within dramatic mountain landscapes, featuring traditional dress, rustic wells and wayside structures, with snow-capped peaks beyond. The palette is soft and harmonious, with confident draughtsmanship and fine detail typical of late Victorian Alpine travel watercolours.


Artist background:

Agnes Bonham was born in Ireland, the daughter of the Rev. John Bonham of Ballintaggart, Co. Kildare. She exhibited sculpture at the Royal Academy in 1871, lived in London from at least that date, and later resided in South Norwood, where she died in 1906. Her family background was notable, with her maternal grandfather having owned Hughenden House, Buckinghamshire.
