Artist;

Harland Hinchliffe was a Yorkshireman. He was born in Penistone South Yorkshire on 16 June 1908 and died on 12# October 2007 in Hampstead. He was the son of Thomas Hinchliffe, owner of the local footware and drapery store, and his mother Emma Watts, a farmer's daughter from Ecklands. He attended Penistone Grammar School (founded in 1392) and at aged 16, he joined the National Provincial Bank in the North of England. In 1936 he obtained a position at the Wood Green Branch in London (which brought him to Hampstead Garden Suburb. He eventually became the Manager of the pensions department in Goswell Road and after 43 years of loyal service with the NPB' he retired in 1967.


Painting and sketching was a life-long hobby and he became a prolific and outstanding painter of watercolours.

His paintings have given enormous pleasure to many people both nationally and internationally. His gift, talent and skills have been documented in many reviews, articles, notes and personal letters. To quote but one critic:

•What a superb watercolour artist this man is; his paintings are absolutely fine examples of this demanding medium. They are swamped in light." Another described a painting of Rain on the Thames' as a 'magnificent work of art in watercolour and his sweeping mastery of that medium'. He was greatly attracted to the River Thames, Cornwall and of course, the Yorkshire Moors.

He exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions over the years, including The Mall Galleries. He won the distinguished Prix du Jumelage; in Chaville (Paris) in 1978 for his painting: "Port of London' and again in 1993 for 'A London River View of St. Paul's'.

Throughout the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, he was Secretary/Treasurer of the Northway Arts Society' and The Institute Society of Arts', Hampstead Garden Suburb. Their annual exhibitions were always awaited with great excitement.
