A beautiful and evocative Victorian souvenir album titled The London Album, dating to 1886, and inscribed as a presentation copy, giving it wonderful personal and historical interest.
Presentation inscription reads:
“Presented to Mrs Smith, by the Members of the Hope Street Congregational Young Women’s Christian Association, as a token of esteem. Hull, May 1st 1886.”
This impressive late-19th-century album is handsomely bound in embossed leather, with decorative tooling to the boards and all page edges gilt. It retains its original brass clasp, a lovely survival that enhances both its appearance and collectability.
Inside are high-quality chromolithographic views of London, depicting famous streets, buildings and landmarks of the period. Many pages are beautifully decorated with floral motifs, butterflies, and gilt highlights, with oval and shaped photograph apertures, originally intended for personal photographs ( unfilled), making this an ideal display or research piece.
