🖼️ Landscape River Scene - Watercolour on Board by Roy Beddington – Circa 1950s
A beautifully atmospheric mid-20th-century English landscape watercolour on board by Roy Beddington, dating to around the 1950s.
The composition captures a tranquil rural scene with expansive meadowland, a quiet waterway or canal, and simple wooden footbridges leading the eye gently into the distance. A small parish church tower rises on the horizon, framed by mature trees and soft rolling countryside beyond. The foreground grasses and reflective water are handled with delicate washes, while the distant hills fade into subtle blue-green tones, creating real depth and serenity.
Beddington’s restrained palette and sensitive brushwork give the piece a calm, timeless quality — a classic example of post-war British landscape painting, evoking the peaceful character of the English countryside.
Signed lower right and measures approx 38cm x 27cm
Artist Biography
Roy Beddington (1910-1995) was a painter and writer, born in London. Educated at Rugby and Oxford and destined for an academic adulthood, he decided that painting was the only career for him. He studied at the Slade in London briefly in 1928 and again later in 1934 under Randolphe Schwabe and he also had private tuition from Bernard Adams. Since early childhood he was always a passionate angler and as a result is remembered as a painter of fishing scenes.
He has often exhibited in London galleries and both wrote and illustrated several books on the subject. A fervent countryman, he illustrated books and wrote for Country Life and designed posters for Shell. Beddington showed his work at the RA, RCamA, RWS, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Fine Art Society, NEAC, Ackermann Gallery and Walker's Gallery, London. His daughter Sarah Beddington was also a painter.
