2 Rare Randolph Caldecott Picture Books – John Gilpin & Come Lasses And Lads

A charming pair of early Randolph Caldecott illustrated children’s picture books, published by George Routledge & Sons, London, dating to around 1884.


These classic Victorian picture books are beautifully illustrated throughout by the celebrated illustrator Randolph Caldecott (1846–1886), whose lively drawings helped define the golden age of children’s book illustration.


Titles included:


• The Diverting History of John Gilpin – written by William Cowper, the famous comic ballad first published in 1782 telling the humorous tale of the draper John Gilpin who accidentally rides a runaway horse far beyond his intended destination.

• Come Lasses and Lads – a lively illustrated verse celebrating traditional English maypole dancing and village festivities.


Both books feature illustrations on every page, including several colour plates, in Caldecott’s distinctive and highly collectible style.
