Elegant Regency Style Mahogany Ladies Writing Desk / Bureau With Leather Top


A very elegant Regency-style mahogany writing desk / bureau plat, often referred to as a ladies writing desk, beautifully made in richly figured mahogany and dating to the early 20th century in the Regency revival style.


The rectangular top is inset with a green leather writing surface, now displaying a warm aged patina that adds character and authenticity. The top is framed with moulded edges and softly rounded corners, giving the desk a refined and balanced appearance.


Above the writing surface sits a charming raised superstructure, designed with a shallow gallery and a series of small drawers and cupboards arranged symmetrically around a central bank of drawers. This configuration is typical of refined early 19th-century English desk design, offering both elegance and practical storage.


Below the writing surface is a full-width central drawer fitted with original brass ring handles and a central key escutcheon. The desk stands on slender turned legs with carved capitals, terminating in elegant tapered feet, and is united by a graceful arched stretcher, providing both stability and a light, decorative profile.


A wonderfully decorative and functional piece that would work beautifully in a study, bedroom, hallway, or sitting room.


Good antique condition and ready for home use. The desk presents well overall; the top gallery tier would benefit from a French polish, as shown in the photographs. General age-related wear consistent with use.
