About Derrick Greaves

Derrick Greaves (1927–2022) was an important British painter and printmaker associated with the early British Pop Art movement. Born in Sheffield, he studied at the Royal College of Art, where he was taught by prominent artists including John Minton and Carel Weight.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s Greaves became associated with the emerging British Pop Art scene alongside artists such as Peter Blake, David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj. His work often focused on colourful still lifes featuring flowers, fruit, ceramics and everyday objects, rendered in bold compositions with strong graphic qualities.

Greaves exhibited widely throughout his career, including at the Royal Academy, Tate Gallery and major London galleries, and his works have appeared regularly at leading auction houses including Christie’s. His paintings and prints are held in numerous public and private collections.

Today his work is recognised as part of the development of post-war British art, combining traditional still-life subjects with the vibrant visual language of Pop Art.
