A wonderful and highly decorative mid-19th century Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible, dating to circa 1850s, bound in original tooled black leather with attractive embossed detailing.
This substantial Victorian family Bible contains both the Old and New Testaments, along with extensive commentary, references, and explanatory notes by Rev. John Brown, making it both a religious and historical piece.
The title page confirms publication by John G. Murdoch, London (Holborn) – a well-known 19th-century publisher of family Bibles and theological works.
A particularly charming feature is the “Family Register” page, intended for recording births, marriages, and family history – a lovely genealogical element, often missing or completed, but here remaining blank and ready for use or display. Very Rare !!!
• Binding worn with wear on spine and brass clasps are missing one tiny knob that locks one of them in place but the other is present so does lock in place as it should
• General age-related wear, scuffing, and rubbing to leather
• Internally clean and complete, with light age toning
• Structurally still present but would benefit from restoration
