This is a single decanter tantalus — a lockable wooden case designed to hold and secure a decanter. The concept dates back to the late 19th century, originally patented in 1881, and was intended to display alcohol while preventing access without a key .
Most traditional examples hold 2–3 decanters, so a single version like this is less common.
Measures approx 29.5cm high x 14cm wide. There is no key but the front drops down and is not locked in place.
The decanter is beautifully cut with a starburst pattern and sits neatly within the oak frame.
Good overall condition with light age-related wear to the wood and brass. Glass decanter in good condition with no obvious chips or cracks
