A beautifully presented 19th century chromolithograph after William Wyld, depicting a classic Venetian scene looking across the Grand Canal towards the magnificent Santa Maria della Salute.


This charming composition captures the atmosphere of historic Venice, with gondoliers navigating the canal, sailing vessels moored along the water’s edge, and figures gathered on sunlit steps to the right. The iconic domed church rises in the distance, anchoring the scene with architectural grandeur.


The work is typical of the Grand Tour taste, where romanticised views of Venice were highly sought after by collectors and travellers.

Artist Bio – William Wyld (1806–1889)


William Wyld was a British painter and watercolourist renowned for his atmospheric architectural and landscape views, particularly of continental Europe.


• Born in London in 1806, Wyld developed a strong reputation for his detailed and evocative cityscapes.

• He travelled extensively throughout Europe, especially Italy, where Venice became one of his most celebrated subjects.

• Wyld exhibited regularly at major institutions including the Royal Academy and the British Institution.

• His works are noted for their light, atmosphere, and architectural precision, often capturing iconic views such as Venice’s canals, Rome’s ruins, and Mediterranean scenes.

• Due to the popularity of his compositions, many were later reproduced as engravings and chromolithographs for the Victorian market.
