Bateman Family (Peter, Ann & William Bateman) – Silversmiths Bio

The Bateman family were among the most respected English silversmiths of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, working in London during the Georgian period.

Peter and Ann Bateman began their partnership in 1760, producing high-quality silverwares known for their refined yet practical designs. Their work is often associated with the elegant restraint of late Georgian taste, favouring clean lines over excessive ornament.

Following Peter Bateman’s death in 1794, Ann Bateman continued the business successfully—an impressive achievement for a female silversmith of the period. She later partnered with her sons, including William Bateman, forming the mark “AB / WB”, commonly seen on pieces from the early 1800s.

William Bateman carried the business forward into the 19th century, registering his own mark in 1815. The family’s silver is highly regarded for its quality craftsmanship, durability, and timeless Georgian styling.

Today, Bateman silver is widely collected, particularly pieces bearing clear London hallmarks and early partnership marks such as those found on items dating around 1800–1810.
