A striking vintage pair of Chinese Foo Dogs (Guardian Lions), dating to the mid-20th century, circa 1950s–60s. These beautifully modelled decorative figures are finished in a vibrant green glaze with darker blue accents and warm ochre highlights to the facial features, giving them a bold and characterful presence.
Traditionally placed in pairs to guard entrances, Foo Dogs symbolise protection, strength, and prosperity. This pair displays the classic opposing expressions – one with an open mouth and one closed – representing balance (often interpreted as “speaking” and “listening”).
Each figure stands approximately 18.5cm high, with good weight and a pleasing gloss glaze. The detailing to the mane, facial features, and paws is crisp and well-defined, making them an eye-catching decorative addition for interior display.
