A desirable early Victorian edition of Thomas Chandler Haliburton’s celebrated humorous classic, The Clockmaker; or, The Sayings and Doings of Samuel Slick of Slickville, published by Richard Bentley, London, 1839. This is the Fifth Edition and retains its engraved frontispiece illustration.
Haliburton’s “Sam Slick” stories became one of the first international bestsellers from North America and are regarded as pioneering works of English-language humour. The character of Samuel Slick, a sharp-tongued travelling clockmaker, offered witty observations on society, politics and human nature, making the work enormously popular throughout Britain, Canada and America.
