About the Artist – George Stubbs (1724–1806)
George Stubbs was one of Britain’s greatest sporting and animal painters. Largely self-taught, he became famous for his remarkably accurate and lifelike depictions of horses, having spent years studying equine anatomy. His work was highly sought after by the British aristocracy and racing elite, and he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1780. Today, Stubbs is regarded as the finest horse painter in British art history.
About Whistlejacket
Whistlejacket was a celebrated chestnut Arabian stallion owned by the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. Painted by Stubbs around 1762, the original life-size portrait is considered one of the greatest equestrian paintings ever created. Unusually, the horse is shown alone against a plain background, allowing full attention to be focused on his power, grace and beauty. The painting is now housed in the National Gallery and remains one of the most iconic horse portraits in the world.
