Antique Victorian French Slate & Marble Mantel Clock – Army & Navy (A&N) – Circa 1880
An impressive late Victorian black slate and green marble mantel clock, retailed by the renowned Army & Navy Co-operative Society (A&N) of London, dating to around 1880–1900. This substantial architectural clock features an elegant black slate case with striking green variegated marble columns and panels, complemented by delicate gilt decoration throughout. Also stamped Paris so that I think parts were made in France but for A&N
The clock has a black dial with Roman numerals, housed behind a brass bezel and glass door. The movement is stamped “A & N”, indicating it was retailed by the prestigious Army & Navy Co-operative Society, known for supplying high-quality goods during the Victorian era.
Measures approx 41.5cm x 34.5cm and extremely heavy
Presented in good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with over 100 years of age. There are some marks and a scratch to the dial case as shown in the photographs. The movement appears complete. As with all antique clocks, it is sold as a decorative antique timepiece, and future accuracy or servicing requirements cannot be guaranteed. When pendulum swings it does work for a while but it appears to be over wound so then comes to a stop so will need attention. Makes a lovely ringing sound on the hour etc.. There is a small chip to corner as shown in close up photo but quite small
