Rare Edwardian-era Perfumed Paper Advertising Cockade Fan - Luce’s, Jersey
Manufactured by Luce's Eau de Cologne Co. Ltd.. When pulled open by its wooden side guards, the pleated paper extends a full 360 degrees into a circular, wheel-shaped fan.
The text on the handle reads "LUCE'S" (often misread as Juce's due to the stylized Edwardian script). Founded in Jersey (Channel Islands), Luce's was a highly prominent British perfumer famous for its Jersey Lavender and specialty floral scents. The address listed is 42 King St., which was the flagship retail shop and manufacturing house for Luce's in St. Helier, Jersey.
This specific fan explicitly states it is "Perfumed with Lilies of the Valley". These promotional fans were infused with the actual fragrance at the factory, allowing prospective customers to sample the scent when they fanned themselves.
This style of promotional "cockade" or "pocket mechanical" fan was a highly popular novelty marketing giveaway during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, specifically circa 1900–1910
Measures approx 26.5cm long
