A fascinating late-19th-century coloured map entitled “BARBARY STATES”, depicting the historic coastal regions of North Africa including Morocco, Algeria, Tunis (Tunisia) and Tripoli, together with parts of Spain, the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Sicily and the Mediterranean.
The map was produced by the celebrated Scottish cartographers John Bartholomew & Co. for The Edinburgh Geographical Institute. An institutional copy of this same Barbary States map is catalogued by the University of Illinois as the work of John George Bartholomew (1860–1920), dated 1890, from the Century Atlas, Plate 26.
Particularly attractive is the detailed inset map of the Bay of Gibraltar, showing Gibraltar, Algeciras, Europa Point, Catalan Bay, Devil’s Tower, the lighthouse and surrounding coastline. The University of Illinois catalogue specifically records the Gibraltar inset and gives the original map scale as approximately 1:10,100,000.
The term “Barbary States” was historically used in Europe for the North African coastal territories associated principally with present-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya.
The map retains its delicate period colouring and is presented in a very attractive wooden frame with burr-effect mount, making it ready to display.
