A beautiful pair of original antique watercolour paintings, signed “F Howard” lower left (could be E Howard. Indistinctly signed ), believed to date from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900.
Both works depict wonderfully atmospheric English river landscapes, very much in the tradition of the Norfolk Broads, with traditional sailing boats, reed-fringed waterways, trees and distant buildings. One scene also features what appears to be a windmill on the horizon, adding further East Anglian character.
The artist has used a particularly attractive muted palette of soft greens, blues, browns and ochres, capturing the stillness and reflections of the water beautifully.
The paintings make an especially appealing companion pair, each complementing the other while showing a slightly different river view.
Both are presented under glass with attractive lined mounts and matching gilt frames, which suit their period character extremely well.
