A handsome Victorian antiquarian edition of Sir Walter Scott’s Tales of a Grandfather – History of Scotland, published in Edinburgh by Robert Cadell, St. Andrew Square in 1846.


The title page is dated MDCCCXLVI – 1846.


Originally written by Sir Walter Scott to introduce younger readers to Scottish history, Tales of a Grandfather became one of his enduring historical works, covering many of the great figures and events in Scotland’s past.


This attractive edition is illustrated with finely detailed engraved views, including the particularly impressive view of Dunfermline shown in the photographs.


Beautifully bound in dark green leather with contrasting darker leather spine, raised bands, ornate gilt-tooled decoration and gilt lettering. The interior also retains attractive marbled endpapers.

Condition:


A genuine antique book approximately 180 years old, with age-related wear consistent with its age.


The leather boards show rubbing, scuffs, scratches and areas of surface wear, particularly around the edges and corners. The spine remains particularly attractive with much of its original gilt decoration and lettering still clearly visible.


Internally the pages appear generally clean and well preserved for their age, with some expected toning. The engraved illustrations remain attractive and detailed.
