Jean Lagadec – “Pegasus” – Original Signed Mixed Media Artwork


An attractive and distinctive original mixed-media work by Jean Lagadec, entitled “Pegasus”.


The composition depicts the legendary winged horse Pegasus in Lagadec’s highly recognisable minimalist style. Using only a few sweeping black and green forms together with a delicate white/incised outline, the artist creates the figure with remarkable economy of line.


The reverse retains a handwritten label reading:


“PEGASUS – MIXED MEDIA”


The work is signed J. LAGADEC lower right and is presented mounted, glazed and framed in a simple black frame.


One particularly interesting feature is Lagadec’s use of his self-developed “entailles” technique, involving cuts/incisions into the paper or canvas. These create subtle relief and changing areas of light and shadow depending upon the direction from which the work is viewed. Lagadec has described this technique as effectively “painting with light.”


About Jean Lagadec (bio)

Jean Lagadec is a French-born artist who was raised and educated in Paris, where his interest in art developed among the art and jazz communities of the Parisian Left Bank during the 1950s. He later became based in Britain and has exhibited in England and continental Europe.


He is particularly known for minimalist works inspired by classical mythology, often reducing human, animal and mythological figures to flowing lines, areas of colour and subtle shadows. Pegasus therefore fits particularly well within his established subject matter.


Frame measures approx 31 x 39cm and the artwork is in good condition


It is a particularly nice example because Pegasus is a classical mythological subject closely associated with Lagadec’s body of work, rather than simply a generic abstract.
