A striking and scarce 1910 first edition of The Devil’s Motor – A Fantasy by Marie Corelli, illustrated by Arthur Severn R.I. and published by Hodder & Stoughton.
An atmospheric Edwardian fantasy with dramatic supernatural imagery centred around the Devil driving a terrifying motor car through the darkness. Particularly desirable for its wonderful Arthur Severn illustrations, including striking colour plates.
Beautiful original red cloth binding, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt and black with a dramatic bat motif to the front board.
There is also an attractive handwritten presentation inscription dated Christmas 1910 to the front, adding further period character.
Condition:
Please study all photographs carefully. The outer binding remains particularly attractive for its age, but internally the book is very fragile. The pages are extremely brittle with age, with significant edge losses, tears, detached/loose sections and other deterioration visible. It therefore needs to be handled with considerable care. Maybe the odd page missing. Please view all photos provided.
Despite the condition, this remains a highly decorative and unusual surviving example of this sought-after illustrated work, with some superb colour imagery.
