A handsome 19th century English antique pole screen, constructed from solid hardwood and retaining its decorative hand-worked needlework fireside panel.
The screen features a square framed needlework panel worked on a dark ground, depicting a colourful central arrangement of flowers surrounded by an elaborate scrolling foliate border in muted gold, red and green tones.
The panel is mounted on a traditional tall brass pole with decorative finial, supported by an elegant turned and reeded hardwood column. The shaped tripod base terminates in three small turned feet, giving the piece a particularly attractive Regency/Victorian appearance.
Pole screens were originally positioned beside the fireplace and the panel could be adjusted to shield the face from the direct heat of the fire. Today they make wonderful decorative pieces for a period interior, fireside setting or antique furniture collection.
Condition: Good antique condition overall with age-related wear, marks and patination consistent with a genuine 19th-century piece. The needlework shows some age and would originally have been glazed but glass is missing. Please study the photographs as these form an important part of the description.
Date: 19th century, probably early-to-mid Victorian, although the design has strong Regency influences.
