Pair Antique German A. Hendschel Skizzenbuch Prints Framed Figurative Studies
An attractive pair of antique German figurative prints from A. Hendschel’s Skizzenbuch, presented together in matching blue and gilt-edged frames.
Each features a delicate monochrome sketch-style study: one depicts two children outdoors, while the other shows a seated figure relaxing in an armchair beside a table.
The printed inscription reads:
“Aus A. Hendschel’s Skizzenbuch (Nachlass.)”
“Nachlass” indicates that the images were produced from material in the artist’s estate/posthumous collection. The lower inscription also refers to Frankfurt am Main and photography/reproduction, suggesting these were issued as reproductions of Hendschel’s original drawings rather than being original pencil drawings themselves.
August Hendschel (1846–1883) was a German artist and illustrator associated with Frankfurt, particularly admired for his lively observational sketches of everyday figures and children.
The prints have an appealing period appearance with some natural age-related toning/fading to the paper. The blue frames also show some minor age-related wear, as visible in the photographs.
The frames measure approx 25 x 33cm
