Henry Callender Esq Blackheath Golfers Framed Golf Print William Ward
An impressive framed golfing portrait of Henry Callender Esq, one of the most important figures in the early history of golf at Blackheath.
The image depicts Callender standing with an early golf club, dressed in a striking red coat. Beneath the portrait is the inscription:
“Henry Callender Esq. To the Society of Goffers at Blackheath. This Plate is with just Respect Dedicated by Their most humble Servant, Wm Ward.”
The image also bears the details “Engraved by Wm Ward, Engraver to their R.H. the Prince Regent & Duke of York.” The original composition dates from the early 19th century and is associated with the celebrated portrait of Callender painted by Lemuel Francis Abbott and engraved by William Ward.
This example appears to be a later reproduction of the historic engraving, rather than an original 1812 impression, and is being sold accordingly. It does have a. Impression mark surrounding the artwork.
Beautifully presented with a wide cream mount and traditional dark wood-effect frame. A very decorative piece and an excellent addition to a golfing collection, golf clubhouse, study, office or man cave.
Good condition, perfect gift
Frame measures approx 48cm x 62cm
A particularly attractive piece of early golf history, depicting Henry Callender and the Society of Goffers at Blackheath.
