Archibald Thorburn Signed Artist Proof Frosty Morning Partridges 1928 Print

Archibald Thorburn (1860–1935) – “Frosty Morning”

Artist’s Signed Proof – Facsimile in Colour – 1928

A wonderful period sporting and ornithological print after Archibald Thorburn, one of Britain’s most celebrated wildlife artists.

Entitled “Frosty Morning”, the composition depicts a covey of grey partridges sheltering amongst frost-covered grasses in an atmospheric winter landscape. Thorburn was particularly renowned for his extraordinarily natural depictions of game birds, and this is a lovely example of one of his classic subjects.

The image bears Thorburn’s printed signature and date 1927 within the composition at lower right, while importantly there is also a pencil signature “Archd. Thorburn” beneath the image.

The original label retained on the reverse identifies the work as:

FACSIMILE IN COLOUR

“FROSTY MORNING”

BY ARCHIBALD THORBURN

ARTIST’S SIGNED PROOF

Published in 1928 by W. F. Embleton, this is a period colour facsimile and Artist’s Signed Proof, rather than a later decorative reproduction.

It is presented behind glass with a wide period mount and simple wooden frame. The understated framing complements the soft wintry colours of the image beautifully.

The reverse also carries the original trade label for John Mathieson & Co., Printsellers, Artists’ Colourmen and Picture Frame Makers, 20 Frederick Street, Edinburgh, adding further period interest and provenance.

About the artist

Archibald Thorburn (1860–1935) was a Scottish painter and illustrator who became one of the most important British wildlife artists of his generation. Born at Lasswade, near Edinburgh, he showed an exceptional ability to depict birds and animals from an early age.

Thorburn became particularly famous for his watercolours of game birds, birds of prey and British mammals, combining remarkably accurate observation with atmospheric landscapes. His illustrations appeared in a number of important natural-history and sporting publications, and his work was exhibited at the Royal Academy.

His original watercolours are now highly sought after, while his contemporary signed proofs and sporting prints remain popular with collectors of British wildlife, shooting and country-house art.
