A wonderful collection of six vintage Portmeirion British Heritage Collection Parian porcelain jugs, dating from the 1980s.


Each jug is beautifully relief moulded with a different design, including flowers, fruit and vines, figures and decorative period motifs, with wonderfully detailed handles, spouts and borders. The crisp white Parian porcelain particularly highlights the fine raised decoration.


The jugs vary slightly in size and design, making them especially attractive displayed together.

History


Portmeirion’s British Heritage Collection was launched in 1987 and was based on original 19th-century moulds.


The story behind the collection is particularly interesting. Portmeirion founder and designer Susan Williams-Ellis discovered old moulds belonging to Kirkham’s pottery stored in an attic. These historic moulds were subsequently brought back into production to create the British Heritage range. Some of the original Victorian designs can be traced to notable 19th-century potteries.


The pieces were produced in Parian-style porcelain, with a fine white bisque/matt appearance that is particularly well suited to detailed relief moulding. The British Heritage Collection is now discontinued.


At least one of the jugs carries the blue printed:


“British Heritage Collection – Portmeirion Porcelain – England” backstamp, while another shown has an impressed circular mark to the base.

Presented in good vintage condition..


A lovely decorative and increasingly collectable group of British-made Portmeirion, combining 1980s production with designs derived from the Victorian ceramic tradition.
