Baby Elephants Arriving Tilbury Docks From Ceylon 1946 Original Press Photo
Original 1946 press photograph documenting the arrival of three baby elephants at Tilbury Docks from Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) on 17th July 1946.
The elephants had travelled aboard the steamship City of Lille and were part of a remarkable consignment of exotic animals and birds destined for London Zoo.
The original period press caption on the reverse records that the shipment included the three baby elephants together with monkeys, mongoose, leopards, squirrels, birds and other animals.
Importantly, this is not a modern reproduction. The photograph retains its original typed press caption and faded period press/agency stamp to the reverse, providing excellent provenance for the image.
A fascinating piece of immediate post-war British social and zoological history, capturing the days when exotic animals for London Zoo arrived in Britain by steamship.
The frame measures approx 27cm x 32cm
An unusual and very appealing original image for collectors of vintage press photography, London Zoo memorabilia, elephants, Tilbury and maritime history, Ceylon/Sri Lanka history or post-war British social history.
