A fine 19th-century British watercolour by Charles Davidson R.W.S., depicting Pomeroy Castle, Devon, presented in an impressive period-style gilt frame.
The atmospheric landscape shows the castle ruins rising above a wooded valley, with figures and a packhorse travelling along the country track in the foreground. Davidson has used a beautifully restrained palette of autumnal browns, ochres and soft blues, giving the scene considerable depth and atmosphere.
The mount is inscribed:
“POMEROY CASTLE – CHAS DAVIDSON. R.W.S.”
Charles Davidson was a respected British landscape watercolourist and member of the Royal Watercolour Society (R.W.S.). He specialised in picturesque rural and landscape subjects and exhibited during the 19th century.
The reverse retains an old dealer’s label for a Manchester picture dealer, Montague Misell adding further interest and provenance. The watercolour is housed behind glass in a substantial decorative gilt frame with a wide gilt mount.
A very decorative and accomplished Victorian watercolour which would appeal to collectors of British landscape art, Royal Watercolour Society artists, Devon topographical views and antique paintings.
The frame measures approx 78.5 x 63cm and has areas of loss
Condition: Antique condition with age-related wear to the frame and backing, as clearly shown in the photographs. The artwork presents very well. Please study all photographs as they form an important part of the condition description.
