John Massey Wright (1777–1866) OWS – “Lovers” – Original Antique Watercolour – 19th Century
A beautiful and charming antique watercolour entitled “Lovers”, attributed to the celebrated English artist John Massey Wright (1777–1866), OWS, renowned for his romantic compositions and delicate literary illustrations.
This delightful painting depicts an elegantly dressed young couple enjoying an intimate moment in a picturesque woodland garden. The gentleman, wearing traditional period costume and a feathered cap, gently embraces his companion whilst reaching towards a flowering rose bush. Beside him, the young lady, dressed in a flowing white gown with a soft pink shawl, leans affectionately towards him.
The scene is beautifully rendered in delicate washes of muted greens, soft pinks, pale blues and warm earthy tones, creating a wonderfully romantic and atmospheric composition.
The graceful figures, expressive gestures and subtle colouring are characteristic of the refined English watercolour tradition of the early 19th century.
About the Artist
John Massey Wright (1777–1866) was a highly accomplished English watercolour painter and illustrator, particularly celebrated for his romantic, historical and literary subjects.
Born into a family of organ builders, Wright initially trained in his father’s profession before pursuing his passion for art. Although largely self-taught, he was fortunate enough to observe the distinguished artist Thomas Stothard working in his studio, whose influence can be seen in Wright’s graceful figure compositions.
Around 1810, Wright became associated with Henry Aston Barker, contributing to impressive panoramic paintings depicting major historical events, including the battles of Coruña, Vitoria and Waterloo.
He also worked as a theatrical scene painter before establishing his reputation through beautifully executed watercolours illustrating works by Shakespeare, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and other celebrated literary figures.
Wright exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1812 and 1818 and was elected an Associate of the Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1824, becoming a full member in 1825.
His illustrations were frequently reproduced as engravings in prestigious publications including The Literary Souvenir, The Amulet and Forget-Me-Not.
Today, his work remains appreciated for its romantic charm, delicate execution and contribution to the golden age of British watercolour painting.
