Small Antique 1846 T Shepherd Hand Coloured Engraving Custom House London Thames
A charming original 1846 hand-coloured engraving by T. Shepherd, depicting The Custom House, London, viewed from the River Thames.
This wonderfully detailed early Victorian scene shows the imposing Custom House stretching along the Thames waterfront, with London’s architectural skyline rising behind. The river itself is particularly atmospheric, populated with sailing vessels, rowing boats and a striking paddle steamer in the foreground, complete with passengers and smoking funnel.
The engraving is titled beneath the image:
“THE CUSTOM HOUSE – LONDON”
and further inscribed:
“Drawn & Engraved for DUGDALE’S ENGLAND & WALES Delineated.”
T. Shepherd is credited at the lower left, with H. Bond Sc. appearing at the lower right.
The subtle hand colouring adds pinks to the sails and warm tones to the buildings and sky while retaining the fine engraved detail.
