Large Antique Heavy Turned Wooden Mortar – Primitive Treen – 29cm
A substantial and wonderfully characterful antique wooden mortar, beautifully turned from a large piece of solid timber, with a deep hollowed interior, thick rounded rim and heavy circular pedestal base.
Standing approximately 29cm high and measuring 26cm across, this is an impressive, weighty example of traditional utilitarian treen.
The exterior features attractive concentric incised bands, a gently rounded body and a broad circular foot. The timber has developed a rich, dark honey-brown patina, with areas of deeper colouring, staining and wear accumulated over many years.
The interior is deeply hollowed and shows considerable surface wear, suggesting prolonged practical use, possibly for pounding or grinding herbs, spices, grains or medicinal preparations.
The form has similarities to traditional mortars found across India, Persia and the wider Middle East, although its precise geographical origin has not been established.
Condition:
Authentic aged condition with extensive surface wear, old splits, shrinkage cracks, knocks, staining and imperfections throughout, particularly to the base and rim. Please study the photographs carefully, as these form part of the description.
An unusual and decorative piece of antique wooden treen, ideal for collectors of primitive kitchenware, ethnographic objects, traditional wooden utensils and rustic country antiques.
A striking decorative object with considerable character and presence.
