This is such a fabulous mourning portrait of Rachel Wadham 1835 - 1856 by the German artist Karl Hartmann 1818-1857
In the back of the frame is a large original piece of Rachel's hair. Rachel died at the age of 21
Rachel was the sister of Edward Wadham who was appointed mineral agent to Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch in 1851 and later, steward of the Manor of Plain Furness and their father was Thomas Wadham 1796 - 1949 who attended Wadham college in Oxford from 1817-1819 and was the High Sheriff or Bristol in 1843, the same year Isaambard Kingdom Brunel completed the construction of the SS Great Britain in Bristol Harbour.
The portrait was framed by Alfred Davis, picture frame makers of Sloane Square in London
