The Isle of Man teapot, by William Brownfield & Sons, was commissioned as a novelty item by the W. Broughton China rooms on Duke Street in Douglas, Isle of Man, circa 1870
The English earthenware teapot is modelled as a three legged Manx sailor in uniform, sitting on a coiled rope. The rope loops up over his shoulder to form the handle. His third leg forms the spout and his head forms the lid. On his collar is molded the Isle of Man symbol.
The base is molded in relief: W BROUGHTON DOUGLAS ISLE OF MAN.
Book reference: “Majolica Figures” – Helen Cunningham, pg. 50
A chip to the neck of the cover, unseen when seated as show in the last couple of photos and also a couple of niks to the spout otherwise in good condition for a teapot of this age
