Wonderful Vintage Original Oil Painting By Gudrun Sibbons Of A Spanish Lady


A superb and rather unusual original oil painting by the German/British artist Gudrun Sibbons (1925–2020), signed by the artist lower left.


This wonderfully atmospheric work depicts an elegant Spanish or Flamenco-style dancer, dramatically posed with one arm raised and a large vessel balanced above her head. A substantial terracotta water jug sits prominently in the foreground.


Sibbons has used wonderfully confident and expressive brushwork, with areas of rich impasto and a particularly attractive palette of turquoise, emerald green, deep red, orange and warm earthy tones.


The sitter’s dark hair, colourful costume and theatrical pose give the painting a distinctly Spanish/Mediterranean character.


This is a particularly interesting subject for Gudrun Sibbons, whose work is much more commonly encountered as landscapes, harbour scenes, Dutch-inspired coastal subjects and rural scenes.


About the Artist


Gudrun Sibbons (1925–2020) was born in Silesia, Germany and studied art in Berlin, Breslau and Hamburg. Her early life was interrupted by the Second World War, during which she worked as a nurse.


After the war she met William “Bill” Sibbons, an RAF officer who was also a talented portrait painter. The couple moved to England and married in 1949.


Gudrun began selling her paintings on the famous Hyde Park railings in London during the 1950s, gradually establishing a considerable following. Her work became known for its atmospheric handling of light, expressive brushwork and strong Continental influence.


Her paintings are now collected in Britain and internationally.
